Which Type 2 EV charging cable should you buy in Dubai?
Shopping for a detachable AC charging lead? The important choices are the connector, current rating, number of phases and length — not simply the biggest kW figure on a listing. This guide explains the differences and points to UAE retailers without selling or endorsing products.
Five checks before ordering a Type 2 cable
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Connector standard | Both ends must suit the vehicle and AC station. Imported Type 1, GB/T or NACS cars may require a different solution; do not assume a simple adapter will work. |
| 16A vs 32A | Check the cable's maximum current and the EVSE/vehicle limits. Ratings are ceilings, not a guaranteed charging speed. |
| Single vs three phase | A cable must be compatible with the intended supply and charger arrangement. A three-phase cable cannot give a single-phase vehicle extra phases. |
| 5 m vs 7 m or longer | Measure from charger socket to the car's charging port along a safe path, allowing a comfortable bend. Avoid a cable that must be stretched across pedestrian routes. |
| Documentation & warranty | Look for the applicable IEC 62196 connection, traceable manufacturer specifications, cable rating, warranty and suitability for outdoor heat and exposure where used. |
11 kW or 22 kW: will the bigger cable charge faster?
Not necessarily. AC charging is limited by the vehicle's onboard AC charger, the charge point and the electrical supply. A cable marked 22 kW does not override those limits.
- A commonly advertised 11 kW three-phase cable is generally 16 A per phase; a 22 kW three-phase cable is generally 32 A per phase. Check actual ratings and conditions for each product.
- A single-phase 32 A installation is typically described as around 7.4 kW, not 22 kW. Real output can be lower depending on settings and supply conditions.
- If your station is tethered (a fixed cable already attached), you usually do not need to buy a second lead for home use.
Numbers here describe nominal AC arrangements; they are not promised charging speeds for a particular car, building or charger.
Practical length: 5 m, 7 m or 10 m?
5 metres can suit a charger located near the car's port and a predictable parking position. 7–7.5 metres gives more flexibility for multiple cars or changing parking orientation. A 10 m lead may be helpful for awkward spaces but is heavier and harder to store. Always check allowed cable lengths, routing and electrical specifications for the intended equipment.
Keep the cable uncoiled as the manufacturer directs when charging, out of traffic paths and away from standing water or damage. Do not use improvised extension leads.

When you need an installer instead of a cable
For a new home charger, a parking bay that lacks an approved supply, or a shared residential building, buying a cable or wallbox first may be the wrong sequence. Get the circuit, load, approvals and installation scope checked before ordering hardware.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Type 2 cable work with every Tesla or BYD?
No universal guarantee. Regional-market versions of a model may differ. Check the actual vehicle charge inlet and manual, not the badge or model name alone. See our Tesla guide and BYD guide.
Can a Type 2 cable plug into an ordinary wall socket?
No. A passive Type 2-to-Type 2 charging cable connects compatible AC vehicle and charger sockets. Household outlets require properly specified charging equipment and a professionally assessed electrical supply.
Can I buy a 22 kW cable for an 11 kW charge point?
A correctly rated compatible cable may support a lower-power AC charge point, but confirm both equipment instructions. The cable will not increase the charge point's maximum output.
Should I buy a cable before getting a home wallbox?
Only when you know whether the wallbox has its own attached cable. Confirm with your installer first to avoid buying something you do not need.
